Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do
Pupils should be able to mark on a number line the probability of a particular event exactly e.g. Pr(4) on a fair six-sided dice.
On a fair dice what is the probability of rolling:
- 5?
- an odd number?
- zero?
- a number greater than 2?
- a prime number?
- a number lying between 0 and 7?
Mark these probabilities on a probability scale.
Probing questions
Make up examples of equally likely outcomes with given probabilities e.g. 0.5, 1/6, 0.2, etc.
Justify your answers.
What if pupils find this a barrier?
Use suitably scaled number lines, e.g. for a 6-sided dice use a line divided into six equal parts.
