Step 1 Objective

Know by heart all addition and subtraction facts for each number to 20.

Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Probing questions

Look at this number sentence:

what number + what other number = 19. What could the two missing numbers be? What else? Can you tell/show me all the pairs of numbers that make 19? How do you know you have got them all?

What is 13 - 8? What other subtractions make 5?

NOTE: The easiest way to establish whether a pupil knows all addition and subtraction facts to 20 is to look for evidence of rapid recall in a range of contexts.

What if pupils find this a barrier?

Ask pupils to find all the additions and subtractions with a given answer - up to about 20.

Encourage pupils to be systematic and to look for patterns.
