Probing questions
How many multiplication and division facts can you make, using what you know about 24 (or 20, 30)? How did you work out the division facts?
What if pupils find this a barrier?
Start from a known multiplication fact, e.g. 3 × 4 = 12 and ask pupils to find all the family of facts, i.e. 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
Ask pupils to repeat for a range of known multiplication facts.
