Step 2 Objective

Classify polygons, using criteria such as number of right angles, whether or not they are regular, and symmetry properties.

Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Probing questions

Show me a regular polygon. How do you know it is regular? What do you look for?

Is this polygon regular? (Show a shape with equal sides but not equal angles.) Why not?

Show me a polygon that is regular and has at least one right angle. Are there any others?

What if pupils find this a barrier?

Use classifying activities, for example:

Give pupils a set of regular and irregular polygons, and criteria for classifying them written on cards, such as 'Regular polygons'; 'Irregular polygons'; 'No lines of symmetry', 'One line of symmetry', etc.; 'No right angles', 'One right angle', etc. Set challenges, such as to find polygons that are irregular with one right angle. Give blank cards for pupils to draw polygons for given criteria. Identifying right angles may need the use of a template from a folded piece of paper, or work on a right angle being a quarter of a turn.

Emphasise the difference between regular and irregular polygons, and different orientations of shapes.
