Step 5 Objective

Use a ruler and protractor to measure and draw lines to the nearest millimetre and angles, including reflex angles, to the nearest degree.

Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Probing questions

Why is it important to estimate the size of an angle before measuring it?

What important tips would you give to someone about using a protractor?

How would you draw a reflex angle, using a 180° protractor?

What if pupils find this a barrier?

Pupils may benefit from using acetates of protractors with the numbers removed. Ask pupils to measure given angles, using just the markings on the acetates. Then look at a conventional protractor and explore measuring in a positive direction and a negative direction, noting the use of the degree scales. Emphasise the importance of estimating before measuring.

Present as a challenge the task of drawing reflex angles, using a 180° protractor. Discuss pupils' strategies.
