Step 2 Objective

Recognise simple fractions that are several parts of a whole, such as Two thirds or Five eighths, and mixed numbers, such as Fifty three quarters; recognise the equivalence of simple fractions (e.g. fractions equivalent to A half, One quarter or Three quarters).

Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Probing questions

Tell me some fractions that are equivalent to A half. How do you know? Are there others? Repeat for fractions like One quarter and Three quarters, One third and Two thirds.

Tell me some fractions that are greater than A half. How do you know?

What about fractions that are greater than 1?

Would you rather have One third of £30 or One quarter of £60? Why?

What if pupils find this a barrier?

Use a counting stick that has different divisions on each face to show equivalence. Use real-life practical examples to show a cake cut into two equal pieces then cut into quarters to show equivalence between A half and Two quarters.

Practise with a variety of images, fractions of circles, rectangles and line segments.

Emphasise that the denominator shows how many equal parts the whole is cut into.
