Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do
Recognise that a whole number is divisible by:
- 100 if the last two digits are 00;
- 10 if the last digit is 0;
- 2 if the last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8;
- 4 if the last 2 digits are divisible by 4;
- 5 if the last digit is 0 or 5.
Probing questions
Can you give me a number greater than 500 that is divisible by 5? How do you know?
How can you tell if a number is divisible by 4?
Can you give me an example of a number that is divisible by 4 and by 5?
What if pupils find this a barrier?
Use the number grid ITP - Zip file (462Kb) or a 1-100 grid to investigate and agree the rules of divisibility. Ask pupils to record the rules in their own way. Then ask pupils to list three numbers between 500 and 600 that are:
- divisible by 2;
- divisible by 4, etc.
Get pupils to check each other's work.
Repeat regularly at the starts or ends of lessons for numbers within a given range.
