Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Probing questions

The product is 40. What two numbers could have been multiplied together?

NOTE: The easiest way to establish whether a pupil knows the multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 multiplication tables is to look for evidence of rapid recall in a range of contexts.

What if pupils find this a barrier?

Use sequences strips to reinforce patterns in multiples:

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, ...
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ...

Use a counting stick and ask pupils to chant multiplication tables forwards, backwards.

Make links between two and four multiplication tables.

Use multiplication grids with missing numbers.
