Find differences by counting up through next multiple of 10, 100 or 1000, e.g. calculate mentally a difference such as 8006 – 2993.


Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Work out mentally that:

4005 – 1997 = 2008 because it is
4005 – 2000 + 3 = 2005 + 3 = 2008

Work out mentally by counting up from the smaller to the larger number:

8000 – 2785 is 5 + 10 + 200 + 5000 = 5215
