Generate coordinate pairs that satisfy a simple linear rule; plot the graphs of simple linear functions.

Examples of what pupils should know and be able to do

Draw and recognise horizontal and vertical lines such as x = 1 or y = –2.
Generate and plot pairs of coordinates for graphs such as y = x + 1 or y = 2x.

Plot and interpret graphs such as y = x, y = 2x, y = x + 1 or y = x – 1.

Interpret points where two lines intersect.

Probing questions

If I wanted to plot the graph y = 2x how should I start?

Why is the point (3, 6) not on the line y = x + 2?

Can you give me the equations of some graphs that pass through (0, 1)? What about ... ?

What if pupils find this a barrier?

Use words to express the equations of the graphs, e.g. give me some coordinates where y is double x, x is equal to 2, y = 3, x = –1
