Recognise that:
- indices are added when multiplying numbers expressed as powers of the
same base number, e.g. 5
× 5
= (5 × 5) × (5 × 5 × 5) = (5 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 5) = 5
= 5
- indices are subtracted when dividing numbers expressed as powers of
the same base number, e.g. 4
÷ 4
= (4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4) ÷ (4 × 4) = (4 × 4 × 4) = 4
= 4
