Use a counting stick that has different divisions on each face to show equivalence. Use real-life practical examples to show a cake cut into two equal pieces then cut into quarters to show equivalence between and .
Practise with a variety of images, fractions of circles, rectangles and line segments.
Emphasise that the denominator shows how many equal parts the whole is cut into.
